Three years after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office with a promise to deliver his Renewed Hope Agenda, opinions remain divided over whether the administration has lived up to the expectations of Nigerians.
When President Tinubu was sworn in on May 29, 2023, he pledged to reposition the nation’s economy, improve infrastructure, and create a more prosperous future for citizens. Since then, his administration has embarked on a series of bold economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market -decisions the government described as necessary to rescue the country from financial distress.
Speaking during activities marking the third anniversary of his administration, President Tinubu maintained that the difficult choices were unavoidable.
According to him, “Without these reforms, Nigeria would have faced a deeper fiscal crisis, worsening poverty, and greater economic instability.”
While government officials continue to highlight improvements in revenue generation, investments, and economic restructuring, many Nigerians say the impact of the reforms has been felt more in their pockets than in their quality of life.
For Solomon Falohun, a resident of Oyo State, the removal of fuel subsidy has brought more hardship than relief.
“The government said removing the subsidy would help the economy and improve the lives of Nigerians, but what we have seen is a sharp increase in fuel prices, transportation costs, and the prices of basic goods and services,” he said.
Sharing a similar view, a youth advocate Moyosore Olamilekan said many young Nigerians are yet to experience the benefits promised under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“We have not seen enough progress in critical sectors that directly affect the lives of ordinary citizens,” he said.
According to Olamilekan, unemployment, inflation, and the high cost of living remain major concerns for young people.
“There is a need for policies that produce visible results. Young people want opportunities, jobs, and a better standard of living. These are the things that will make them believe in the government’s agenda,” he added. Despite the criticism, some observers acknowledge that the administration has recorded notable achievements in certain areas.
Public affairs analyst Bimpe Adelowo pointed to the government’s tax reforms as one of its significant accomplishments.
“The tax reforms introduced by this administration have helped move Nigeria closer to international best practices and could improve government revenue in the long term,” he explained.
However, Adelowo stressed that progress in one area should not overshadow the challenges confronting the country.
“Insecurity remains a major concern. Many communities still live in fear, while businesses continue to suffer from security challenges,” he said.
He further noted that some of the economic reforms, though intended to strengthen the economy, have placed additional burdens on citizens.
“The reality is that while some reforms may be beneficial in the long run, many Nigerians are currently struggling with their consequences. The government must find ways to cushion these effects and improve the living conditions of the people,” Adelowo added.
As the Tinubu administration begins its fourth year in office, Nigerians are looking beyond policy declarations and economic projections.
For many citizens, the true test of the Renewed Hope Agenda lies in its ability to reduce hardship, improve security, create jobs, and deliver tangible improvements to everyday life.
