Nigeria is once again approaching a defining moment in its democratic journey. The 2027 presidential election is already shaping up to be one of the country’s most closely watched political contests, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu seeking another term and several opposition figures positioning themselves for a major challenge.
The election is expected to test not only the popularity of individual politicians and political parties, but also the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, the credibility of the electoral process and the ability of voters to demand solutions to the country’s most pressing problems.
When Will Nigerians Vote?
According to the latest timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for 16 January 2027, while the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for 6 February 2027. The presidential campaign period is scheduled to run from August 19, 2026, until shortly before election day.
This means that Nigeria has officially entered the critical phase of the 2027 election cycle.
INEC has also begun publishing the personal particulars and supporting documents submitted by presidential and National Assembly candidates, allowing members of the public to scrutinise information provided by candidates. However, the final list of presidential and National Assembly candidates is scheduled for publication on September 12, 2026.
