August 15, 2026 will remain a remarkable day in the history of the Ilugun High School Abeokuta Old Students Association (IHSAOSA) as the 1990 Set was officially inaugurated, 36 years after leaving secondary school.
The colourful event marked the fulfilment of a long-awaited vision and brought together old classmates, former teachers, school administrators and members of the National Executive of IHSAOSA.
During the occasion, the memories of Mrs. Bose Kuforiji and Mrs. Serifat Adebowale (wife of Oye-Olusegun), both of blessed memory, were honoured. They were remembered for their good deeds and contributions during their lifetime.
The National President, Mr. Babafemi Akinlana, encouraged members of the 1990 Set to make the alumni association a priority, stressing that belonging to the association offers opportunities for meaningful connections, mutual support and employment opportunities. He also challenged the set to initiate and complete a tangible project in the name of the 1990 Set.
The Pioneer Alumni President, Dr. Ganiyu Oseni, reflected on their years in school and acknowledged that many of them were still trying to find their direction at the time. Looking back on the journey of life, he expressed appreciation for the progress made and stated that there is no longer any rift between him and the National Chairman, as all outstanding matters have been amicably resolved.
Notable personalities in attendance included Mr. Faluyi, Mrs. Adeola, Mr. Yemi Sobanke, the pioneer coordinating teacher for the alumni initiative, and Mr. D. O. Folarin, alongside former teachers and the principals of both the Junior and Senior Schools, Mrs. Durodola and Mrs. Morenikeji.
The Guest Speaker, Mr. David Folarin, who served as an Agricultural Science teacher from 1993 to 2002 and was also the composer of the school anthem, delivered an insightful presentation on the historical background of the Old Students’ Association.
Mr. Folarin emphasised the importance of love, peace and unity among all old students. He encouraged members to remain committed to the National body by paying their dues and supporting meaningful development projects. He specifically mentioned the need for tangible contributions such as the provision of printers, computers and photocopiers to support the school.
He also encouraged the alumni to maintain relationships with their former teachers, remember them on special occasions and show appreciation for their contributions to their education and development.
Similarly, Mr. Yemi Sobanke encouraged every set to undertake projects according to its capacity, either in the Junior School, Senior School or both, stressing that every contribution counts toward the development of the alma mater.
The event also featured the presentation of awards to deserving individuals in recognition of their contributions. Award recipients included Mr. Faluyi, Mr. Sobanke and the late Primate Z. Somoye.
The occasion was attended by members of the National Executive, including Mr. Babafemi Akinlana, National Chairman; Com. Abiodun Oyewo, National P.R.O.; National Welfare Officer, Com. Olokunola; and ESV Olaleye of the 1996 Set.
The inauguration of the 1990 Set represents another significant milestone in the continuous growth, unity and development of IHSAOSA. It is hoped that the set will sustain the spirit of togetherness and contribute meaningfully to the development of Ilugun High School.
