Liability of META Platforms for Harmful Product Features-

The Plaintiff in the American case, in which judgment was delivered on 25 March 2026 in California, United States of America, hinged her case against META on claims that the company’s products caused her social media addiction. She argued that two specific features of META’s platforms were dangerous and directly contributed to her harm: infinite scroll and algorithmic recommendations.

Infinite scroll is a web design technique that continuously loads content as a user scrolls down, eliminating the need for pagination or a “next page” button. It is commonly used in social media feeds and e-commerce sites to increase engagement, allowing for seamless browsing of large amounts of data.

Algorithmic recommendation refers to a computer-driven filtering system that uses machine learning and data analysis to suggest personalized content, products, or services to users. These systems analyze user behavior—such as clicks, watch time, and ratings—to predict preferences and reduce information overload, functioning as recommendation engines.

In this case, the Plaintiff contended that these features—designed to maximize user engagement—caused her anxiety and depression. The court found META Platforms liable for the faulty design of its products, ruling that the features contributed to the Plaintiff’s harm. Consequently, the court awarded damages of $6 million against META.

Conclusion:
This judgment underscores the growing legal recognition of the psychological impact of digital product design. It highlights the responsibility of technology companies to ensure that engagement-driven features do not compromise user well-being.
