Edo-Born World Champion vs Corruption, Favouritism and Nigerian Sports Politics

Who is Bash Ali❓

Bashiru Lawrence Ali Abudu, OON, popularly called *Bash Ali* is Edo State-born boxing legend. First and only Nigerian to hold World Boxing Federation (WBF) Cruiserweight World Title. Undefeated cruiserweight champion. Officer of the Order of Niger – the highest national honour ever given to a Nigerian athlete (awarded 2006 by President Obasanjo).

He is not just a boxer. Since 2006, he became the symbol of anti-corruption crusade in Nigerian sports.

THE DREAM THAT TURNED TO NIGHTMARE.

In 2006, President Olusegun Obasanjo approved Bash Ali’s dream: *To host in Nigeria the Guinness World Record Boxing Championship Fight as the oldest man to win a world title*, and set up a Local Organizing Committee (LOC).

Projection: With $48m investment, Nigeria would earn $750m minimum profit from Pay Per View TV in USA alone, over $1b globally, plus make Nigeria first African nation to host Guinness Record boxing fight.

What stopped it? According to Bash Ali, NEPOTISM, CORRUPTION and Favouritism.

#NEPOTISM AS BASH ALI DESCRIBES IT:
Nepotism is defined by scholars Ezumah (2018), Umeze (2019), Sholade (2020) as: Aberrational practice by political office holders to unduly exploit privileges of official power to influence appointment of relatives or kinsmen, grant unjust favour to family/ethnic cronies without recourse to merit, to cover shady deals.

Bash Ali alleged this exact pattern blocked his fight for 17 years (2006-2023):

– NEXIM Bank Saga: President Jonathan in 2013 mandated NEXIM Bank and Bank of Industry to release $30m to LOC. Bash Ali alleged Managing Director of NEXIM, Robert Orya, demanded $10m bribe from it. Later alleged demand rose to $100m from projected $750m PPV profit. When he refused, his files were stalled.

– National Sports Commission: He wrote to President Buhari in 2015 that Minister Solomon Dalung, Perm Sec Christian Ohaa, DG Alhassan Yakmut were embodiment of bad administration, frustrating his effort because he refused gratification.

– #Consequences for Saying No:
– Beaten and injured twice, admitted at National Hospital Abuja
– Detained 8 times at various police stations Abuja
– Remanded 43 days at Kuje Prison in February 2015 for “criminal trespass and intimidation” after confrontation at NEXIM headquarters where his driver was beaten.

In his 68th birthday post in 2024, he summarized:

For 17 years I struggled in vain to host in my country my Guinness World Record Fight because I was bold to say no to corruption. In 17 years, I went from being a millionaire in dollars to a zeronaire in naira. I went through hell not because I am criminal but because I say no to corruption.

#BASH ALI’S OWN POSITION ON NEPOTISM.

At his peace book launch in Warri, Bash Ali said:
If we must see lasting peace in Nigeria, we must imbibe spirit of genuine friendship regardless of tribe and religious orientations.

He argues nepotism in sports administration means:
– Jobs, funds, opportunities given to relatives, tribesmen, cronies
– Merit killed
– National interest sacrificed for private gain
– Talents like him frustrated

He vowed: I never gave up on my dream to fight in Nigeria and I never gave up on Nigeria. I will fight until 70, retire young and healthy with lot of money and then become President of Nigeria.

#LESSON FOR EDO AND NIGERIA

Bash Ali is Edo’s greatest sports export after Samuel Ogbemudia. His story is case study of how nepotism destroys:

1. Economy – $1bn lost
2. Image – Nigeria could have been first African Guinness record boxing host
3. Talent – From millionaire in dollars to zeronaire in naira

For Elation Magazine, his fight is beyond boxing. It is fight for system where *merit beats surname, talent beats tribe, integrity beats connection.

Bash Ali’s message to young Edo athletes: Don’t join corruption to succeed. Stand firm, even if you lose everything temporarily. Posterity will vindicate you.
