The Measure of True Leadership:
A leader must demonstrate uncanny courage, unwavering commitment, and exemplary leadership. A leader is one who sets the standard, leads the way, and rallies the support of followers when they are in despair, disillusioned, or when their spirit is down. In moments of hopelessness, directionlessness, and disorientation, the leader must show the way, transforming despair into hope and restoring confidence.
It is therefore troubling when someone, offered a platform by a political party to contest elections on a platter of gold, chooses to abandon that party once it becomes engulfed in crisis. Instead of mediating or reconciling members in conflict, such a leader takes the easy option of walking away, leaving behind the very platform that once provided succour. Can such a person truly lead a fractious country like Nigeria, where perpetual centripetal and centrifugal forces are always at play?
I have identified leaders who, when faced with turbulence, chose to abandon their sinking vessels rather than steer them safely to anchor. Yet, the true test of leadership is not in fleeing from storms but in navigating them with courage and conviction. A captain does not desert the ship; he steers it to safety.
Conclusion: Leadership is proven in crisis. Those who abandon their platforms when storms arise reveal not strength but fragility. Nigeria, with its mosaic complexity, requires leaders who can inspire hope, reconcile differences, and steer the nation through turbulent waters—not those who choose escape over endurance.
