I think about the farmer who spends months cultivating his farm, only to watch part of his harvest lose value because the road to the market is bad.
He has done the hard work. He has planted, weeded and harvested. But when the transporter tells him the journey will cost more because of the road, there is little he can do.
By the time he reaches the market, his profit has already been reduced.
This is the reality many of our people face.
A bad road affects the farmer, trader, student, patient, transporter and small business owner.
When roads fail, everything becomes more expensive.
Farmers struggle to move produce. Traders pay more for transportation. Businesses find it difficult to reach customers. Patients can spend precious time travelling to hospitals. Communities become isolated.
This is why I have made roads and connectivity an important part of my Kogi East Development Agenda.
We need to improve the major corridors connecting our communities and economic centres, including Anyigba-Ankpa, Idah-Ibaji, Dekina-Bassa, Ankpa-Omala and Olamaboro. We also need attention to the rural roads that connect farms and villages to our markets and towns.
My concern is not simply about putting asphalt on the ground.
The real question is what that road will do for our people.
Can the farmer get his produce to market at lower cost?
Can the trader move goods more easily?
Can a sick person reach a health facility faster?
Can our young people travel safely to school and work?
Can businesses come into our communities because transportation has become easier?
These are the questions I want our representation to address.
As a senator, I will not pretend that I can personally construct every road. But I can use the office to pursue these issues through legislation, budget advocacy, oversight and direct engagement with the relevant federal agencies.
I want to see a Kogi East where roads connect production to markets and communities to opportunity.
We have farmers. We have land. We have young people. We have traders and entrepreneurs. We have natural resources and a strategic location.
What we need is infrastructure that allows these strengths to work for our people.
I am offering myself for the Senate because I believe our people deserve representation that understands these everyday challenges and is prepared to pursue practical solutions.
Let us stop treating underdevelopment as our destiny.
Let us build the connections that will allow Kogi East to work, trade, produce and prosper.
That is the development I want to pursue with you.
