A school without safety is a prison with homework. A child who is afraid cannot learn. A teacher who is afraid cannot teach.
1. THE HARD TRUTH WE MUST FACE
In the last few years, our schools have been attacked not just by poor funding, but by fear. Kidnappings. Cultism. Bullying. Building collapse. Poor perimeter fences.
Problem Creators turned our schools into targets.
In 2026/2027, we as parents, teachers, government, and communities must become Solution Providers and turn them back into sanctuaries.
Wisdom: You cannot build a nation by sacrificing its children.
2. THE 5 PILLARS OF SAFER SCHOOLS FOR 2026/2027
PILLAR 1: PHYSICAL SAFETY – “SECURE THE GATE”
1. Perimeter Fencing + Gate Control: Every public and private school must have a functional fence and a security post. No open gates.
2. Safety Audit: Principals, conduct structural checks. Cracked walls, exposed wires, and bad toilets kill faster than guns.
3. Emergency Drills: Fire, earthquake, and evacuation drills should be as regular as Mathematics tests.
PILLAR 2: HUMAN SAFETY – “SECURE THE CHILD”
1. Anti-Bullying Policy: Zero tolerance. A bully today is a criminal tomorrow. Counselors must be present in every secondary school.
2. Anti-Kidnap Protocols: No child leaves school with a stranger. Verified pickup register. Parent ID cards. Coordination with local vigilantes and police.
3. Mental Health: Watch for signs of depression, drug abuse, and cult recruitment. A safe child is a sound mind.
PILLAR 3: DIGITAL SAFETY – “SECURE THE PHONE”
Our children are resuming with phones in their pockets.
Teach them: Not every friend online is a friend. Not every challenge on TikTok is wise.
Schools must run “Cyber Safety Fridays” – 30 minutes to teach children how to avoid online predators and fake news.
PILLAR 4: COMMUNITY SAFETY – “IT TAKES A VILLAGE”
1. PTA + Security Partnership: Every school should have a WhatsApp security group with parents, teachers, and the nearest police station.
2. Adopt-a-School by Royals & CDAs: Traditional rulers and community leaders must “adopt” schools in their domain and police them.
3. See Something, Say Something: Report strange movements around schools. Don’t keep quiet.
PILLAR 5: GOVERNMENT SAFETY – “FUND THE FUTURE”
To the Federal and State Governments:
Budget for school security is not a waste. It is investment.
Deploy more school resource officers. Equip them. Pay them.
Implement the Safe Schools Declaration fully. Insurance for students. Rapid response teams.
3. A CHARGE TO EVERY STAKEHOLDER
TO PARENTS: Your child’s safety starts at home. Teach them their full name, your number, and “stranger danger”. Don’t send them to school sick. Don’t bring them to school late.
TO TEACHERS: You are not just instructors. You are first responders. Know your students. A child that suddenly becomes quiet may be crying for help.
TO STUDENTS: Be your brother’s keeper. Report bullying. Don’t join gangs. Your book is your weapon. Your brain is your shield.
TO GOVERNMENT: A nation that cannot protect children in classrooms cannot protect borders. Fund education. Fund security. Fund the future.
CONCLUSION: THE DREAM FOR 2026/2027
This session, let our headline not be “School Attacked”.
Let our headline be “100% Enrollment. 0% Fear.”
Let every child in Sokoto, in Lagos, in Maiduguri, in Abeokuta resume and return home safely.
Because a safe school produces engineers, doctors, and presidents.
An unsafe school produces trauma, dropouts, and fear.
As the gates open today, let us open our eyes too.
