WHEN THE ALTAR BECAME A SHOWROOM: Why We’re Mostly Religious But Not Godly in Nigeria Today

*Look around Nigeria today.*

Our churches are full on Sunday.
Our mosques are full on Friday.
Our prayer meetings run till midnight.
Our WhatsApp statuses are full of “Amen” and “God is working.”

But walk outside those gates and you will see the truth:

We worship money more than we worship God.
We worship position more than we worship purpose.
We worship earthly belongings more than we worship the One who owns the earth.

*1. THE NEW RELIGION: MONEY, POWER, AND “SHOW”*
We didn’t stop going to church or mosque.
We just changed what we go there to chase.

We go for contracts, not convictions.
We go for connections, not consecration.
We go to be seen, not to be saved.

Today, a man can embezzle public funds on Monday, and be the highest donor in church on Sunday.
A woman can lie, cheat, and backstab all week, then lead praise and worship on Friday night.

We are highly religious.
But our lives show zero evidence of what we claim to believe.

*2. THE EMPTY WORSHIP PROBLEM*
God never asked for attendance. He asked for transformation.

Jesus said it plain: _”By their fruits you shall know them.”_
Not by how long they prayed.
Not by how big their title is.
Not by how many services they attended.

But today in Nigeria, we measure spirituality by:
1. *Car size* – “Pastor just bought a new Prado”
2. *Position* – “She’s the Women Leader, protocol officer, special adviser”
3. *Buildings* – “Our church just dedicated a 10,000 seater auditorium”

We have crowds, but no character.
We have noise, but no newness.
We have titles, but no truth.

*3. WHAT THIS IS COSTING US AS A NATION*
A nation that worships money will always sell its conscience.
A nation that worships position will always rig elections and oppress the weak.
A nation that worships things will always abandon people.

That is why corruption thrives.
That is why leaders loot and still kneel for prayers.
That is why we can watch injustice happen and still say _”God knows best.”_

We are not lacking religion. We are lacking righteousness.

*4. THE HARD RESET WE NEED*
God is not impressed by full auditoriums.
He is looking for full hearts.

*To the religious*: Attendance without obedience is just exercise. If your prayer life is not changing your business ethics, your politics, and how you treat people, then you’re just religious.

*To the leaders*: You cannot serve God and Mammon. The offering plate is not a car wash for dirty money.

*To all of us*: Let’s stop chasing blessings and start chasing the Blesser.
Because a man who has God has everything.
A man who has everything but no God has nothing.

Nigeria does not have a prayer problem.
We have a practice problem.

We can fill stadiums for crusades, but we can’t fill our hearts with integrity.
We can fast for 40 days, but we can’t be honest for 40 minutes.

Until our worship on Sunday matches our work on Monday,
Until our religion produces righteousness,
We will remain a “religious” nation with “godless” results.

God is not looking for more worshippers of things.
He is looking for worshippers in Spirit and in Truth.

Because at the end, God won’t ask you: “How many services did you attend?”
He will ask: “What did you do with what I gave you?”
