A healed mind is egoless; it has no sense of separation from God and people, no self-concept, no self-image, no sense of guilt and sin; it feels sinless, guiltless, innocent, holy and sanctified (oneness with God); it has no pride or shame, fear, anxiety, or anger; it feels at one with all existence; it is peaceful and happy.
One must have clarity as to the purpose and goal one has in mind when one seeks healing. What exactly do you want to accomplish?
Healing wants to cure sickness. What is sickness? By sickness, generally, people mean bodily sickness. Here, I am talking about spiritual healing.
The sickness here is separation from our creator, God. Healing is regaining awareness of our eternal union with God. We cannot be separated from God, but we can forget that reality and have the illusion that we are separated from God and his other creation.
The world we live in is the illusion that each of us is separated from God and other people, and the proof is that each of us lives in a body, a body that is not other people’s bodies, a body walking around in space and time, hence it seems separated from all people and things. This is the sickness: the belief that we are separated from God and all things.
Healing is jettisoning that belief and accepting the truth that we are always joined to God, all people, and all things; we are always in a state of eternal union with God.
If it were possible for us to separate from God, God would die, and we would die. God and his creations cannot separate from each other; it is in their eternal union that they live eternally.
Nevertheless, while in the state of eternal union, each of us had a desire to separate from God and all sons of God. The desire for separation was motivated by our wish to create God, create ourselves, and create the world, which we could not do in heaven, and we dream of it.
We cannot separate from God, but we made ourselves seem to have gone to sleep and, in our sleep, dream that we are separated from God and his other sons. We invented a physical universe of space, time, and matter and used them as instruments of separating from our reality, in our awareness, anyway, but in truth, we are always unified with God and all people.
We do not want to know that we are connected to all people and things because we are attracted by the illusion of separation and power. We place ourselves in bodies, and that makes us seem separated from God and each other.
Each of us often makes our bodies sick. Sickness of one’s body is a projection by one’s mind onto the body.
The mind that seeks separation is sick, and since it does not want to know about the source of the sickness, where the sickness is, in the mind, and where to heal it, in the mind, it projects it to the body and makes the body sick, age, weaken, and seem to die.
As long as he sees the sickness in the body, he concentrates his efforts trying to heal his body, and in doing so, forgets where the sickness is, in his mind that seeks separation from itself.
When the mind accepts that it is eternally in a state of union with its creator, God, it is healed. To be in union with God, one will be as God created one, spirit, not as one made one, a separated self in a body.
Thus, to regain the awareness that one is joined to God, one must overlook one’s body and go inside.
As Brother Jesus Christ said, the Kingdom of God is inside us, not outside us. The kingdom of God is the oneness of one and God and all creation in spirit, inside each of us.
The Will of God is that He and his sons are eternally one, unified. No one can disobey the Will of God and separate from him. What one can do is juxtapose an oppositional wish to the will of God. The will of God is always done. Hence, we are always in eternal union, but we can invent the opposite of union, see a separate world, and seem to live in it, and now see people and things.
God’s world is the world of knowledge; our world is the world of perception; in perception, we see people and things that are not parts of us.
The world of God is the world of knowledge, the consciousness of our eternal union. Healing, salvation, redemption, and deliverance are the awareness that one is always inside the union of God and his son. One cannot be outside the kingdom of God, as the ego thinks that it is.
The ego, body, and physical universe of space, time, and matter are illusions that we made to veil, mask, and block awareness of our reality as part of God.
Healing is removing the mask, the veil, the block to the awareness of our unified state. Remove the mask, remove your ego sense of separation, and you become aware of your union with God and all creation.
Alas, we do not want to accept healing because it costs us everything we currently believe is valuable: the physical world, our separate self, body, material wealth, and so on. Healing has a price: the giving up of the world of personal power and separation.
To reach God, you have to see the world as valueless and accept what has value, God and his son, in a joined state. There is literally oneself, God Self, and we are all parts of that Unified Self, and while in it, we dream that we are outside it. We cannot be outside our spiritual union with God and each other.
THE PURPOSE OF PRAYER AND MEDITATION IS TO REGAIN THE AWARENESS OF UNION WITH GOD
What is prayer? Praying is removing the obstacle to the awareness of our union with each other and God. In praying, you ask God to help you remove the barriers to the awareness of union so that you regain awareness of your union with him and all people at the spiritual level.
Praying is not the perversion the ego has made it to be, seeking the things of this world. Real prayer asks God to help one attain a sense of union with him. That is, asking God to help you to die to the ego separated self and become reborn in Christ, to let Christ come a second time into your life, to be as God created you, the Christ, the holy son of God who is one with God and all creation.
We on earth are sick and need healing. This means that we are separated from each other and from God; we are afraid of regaining the awareness of our union in spirit.
Many white folks would rather die than accept union with black people. They prefer to be separate from black people.
In Africa, each tribe sees itself as separate from other tribes and wants to seem superior to other tribes.
Americans elected a sick man who tells them that they are separated from black people; in Africa, the various tribes elect sick leaders who tell them that they are separated from other people. In this belief in their racial and or tribal separation, they all remain sick.
To avoid awareness of their sickness, they project their sickness onto their bodies and run around medical centers seeking a cure for their bodily illnesses. They treat the symptoms, not the disease.
The real cure for their illness lies in accepting that they are spirit, not body, and that their minds are sick if they believe in separation from God and other sons of God.
Not long ago, I visited my alma mater in a small American town. I suddenly saw the place that used to seem vibrant when I was at college there, as desolate. I had an overwhelming sense that I was among sick people, these MAGA Americans. I wondered how I could help heal them.
Their sickness is the current affirmation of their separation from God and people; what would heal them is for them to change their minds and accept that they are in eternal union with God and all people.
Love is what affirms union among people and God; they have to love God, love each other, and love all human beings. I cannot single-handedly heal them, but I can do my part, and that is to see them as one with me and love them, to join my mind with their minds; in joining my mind with their minds, I offer them healing. However, they become healed if they also join all people.
Those who join all people and know themselves as one are healed. You can help heal other people by removing your ego and joining people and asking God to help all of us to remove our Egos and join you, but no human being can change other people’s minds for them.
Each of us chose separation to be on earth, and each of us must choose union to regain the awareness of heaven. All that you can do is choose union and ask God to help other people to also choose union, and when we collectively choose union, we are healed.
Look at any person around you. You will see the sick ones making efforts to seem separated from other people. You can try to help them by removing your ego and joining their spirit selves and praying that their higher selves, the Holy Spirit, the Christ in them, enable them to remove their own egos and join you and all people in union with each other.
In the meantime, you love the person who has chosen separation from people and you (I am talking spiritual separation).
I know a woman that I shall call EJ; she is sick because she chooses separation from her parents, siblings, and most people; I pray for her to affirm union with God and all people; I pray for her to love the Christ in her and all people. When she removes her ego and loves all people and their creator, she will remember the Christ in her and in all people and become healed.
WHAT IS THE END GOAL OF HEALING?
IT IS EGOLESSNESS
On earth, each of us believes that he has an ego, a separate self-housed in a body, and is walking around the earth. This is the illusion of this world that the Son of God is separated from his Father and brothers.
If you are on earth, you have already decided to be separated from God and all people and see yourself as a separated self in a body. This is what we came here to do: to forget our eternal union with God and each other.
We do so in dreams, illusions, not reality. At some point, some people, such as Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha, realize that they cannot possibly be separated from God and other people. We are even at the physical level, joined together as part of one physical energy.
At the mind and spirit level, we are all joined with God, the whole self, and with all people. If you accept that you are not an ego separated self, accept that you are one with all selves and their creator, then you let go of your ego self-concept, your ego self-image, your identification with body. In letting go of the ego-separated self, you feel egoless.
Egolessness is the realization that one is not separated from other people and their creator, and that one is eternally unified with them.
Instead of affirming your ego, separated self, you affirm our unified spirit self.
You can train your mind to know that it is egoless and no longer defends the ego.
The ego is not a self or thing; it is a wish for power to create oneself and a wish for separation; that wish is defended with ego defense mechanisms.
Now, you stop defending the ego. For example, in childhood, I rejected my traumatized body and used my mind, in Karen Horney’s terms and Alfred Adler’s psychological categories, to formulate an ideal, powerful, and superior ego and pursue it. I used various ego defense mechanisms to defend my ideal, powerful ego, the separated self. I was rigidly defensive of the ego Ideal. I wanted to become an ideal, perfect, powerful self and defend those illusions.
I behaved as if I were ideal. If you liked my ideal self, I like you and got along with you, but if you did something negative to my ideal self, my act of being perfect, I felt angry at you.
To live as an ego is to live in fear of not being that ego and to be perpetually angry at those you see as demeaning your desired grandiose ego.
But if you accept that you are not an ego, ideal, or ordinary, that is, if you accept ego death, you no longer feel fear or anger at what affects the made-up self, the pretended self we call our ego selves.
You can train your mind by repeatedly reminding yourself that you are not the ego, but the son of God, the Christ who is one with God and all sons of God, and by accepting that Christ is joined to all people and that Love joins all people, so you love all people.
Train your mind to love all people and, in loving them, obtain a sense of oneness with all people.
You look beyond your body and look beyond other people’s bodies and what they do in bodies and affirm the unified spirit in all of us.
What you seek and affirm, you surely must get. When I seek the ego, I get the ego and the pain it gives me. When I seek Christ and use Jesus Christ as my guide to a loving self, I love all people and feel peaceful and joyous.
Seek ego and get it; seek egolessness, aka Christ, and you get it. What you seek is what you get.
Please do not deceive yourself; if you decide to seek egolessness, Christ, and you are trained in the physical sciences, you have an uphill battle.
According to science, the universe is outside us, is objective, and not inside us. The universe began in a violent attack of everything on everything called the Big Bang. We attacked each other and pushed each other away from us, and shattered eternal oneness.
Each of us identifies with a fragment of God and calls it his separated self and lives as it. Indeed, we formed our cells in a pool of water where the required elements, such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, gathered by accident, and light from lightning provided heat to join them, and cells were formed. That is to say that we are part of the physical phenomena that accidents form.
This is true as long as you are in the dream, but if you want to get out of the dream, and stop desiring a separated ego self, no longer affirming your power based on ego and separation and accept power given by God, the Holy Spirit, Christ, your real self you will feel peaceful and happy and in the long run feel one with God and all his creation and from that experience know that we are one shared self.
FORGIVENESS
It helps us to realize that everything we do on earth is done in a dream. What is done in a dream has not been done.
On Earth, people do terrible things to you, and you do terrible things to people. You probably bear grudges and grievances and seek vengeance against those who harmed your ego and body. Vengeance seems necessary if we are separated selves.
But if we are unified, who did harmful stuff to you, and who are you seeking revenge against? You!
This is because you and other people share oneself. The world is a dream, and what is done in it is done in a dream, so you know that other people have not done what you see them do to you; you forgive the wrongs done to you, and in forgiving the wrongdoers, you forgive your own wrongdoing to them.
Forgive the wrongs others did to you, to love them, and in loving them know that you are one with them.
Forgiveness, which is the true meaning of love on earth, heals our sickness, for in forgiveness and love we join people, and in joining them we join God and heal our bodily illness and mental illness of believing in separation.
SEE YOUR MEDICAL DOCTORS FOR HELP
If you are not yet ready to accept union with God, you should see your bodily illnesses as due to germs and other factors and go see your medical doctors and accept treatment from them. Not all people are ready to accept that the sickness lies in separation from God; you have time to do so, in this lifetime or in others.
CONCLUSION
People are at various levels in their journey through space, time, and matter. Accept where you are. If you see yourself as a separate self in body, then use medication to heal your physical disorders. But if you have gotten to the level where you suspect that you are more than body and ego, spiritual healing may be for you.
At the highest level of evolution on earth, folks know that all people are related to them and that what all people do to them is meant for their good. Even when people seem to do what the world calls terrible things to them, they did it for their good.
For example, if you identify with an ideal ego self, fancy yourself as a superior person, other people will do things that make you feel not like the high and mighty person you want to be. They may reject you for jobs that you think you are qualified for, or generally do things that make you feel like they humiliated you. In humiliating your ego, what they are really doing is teaching you that you are not the ego that can be humiliated or exalted, but that your real self is the Son of God, the Christ, that no one can humiliate.
Christ is love; if you identify with the Christ, you are humble and loving, and so people will not do anything to humiliate you. It is when you identify with a false, deluded, grandiose self that people help you by humiliating it, which initially may make you angry at them. But eventually, you feel grateful to them because, in humbling you, you remember that you are not the pretentious ego but the son of God, Christ, unified spirit.
Those who exalt themselves are humbled; those who humble themselves are loved. It will take me far afield to talk about the fact that all things done to you by other people are for your own good, but for now, it is enough to recognize that people love you, even when they do bad things to you, and if you forgive them, you have loved them and in loving them, you love yourself, and in so doing is healed.
All sicknesses begin in the mind, the mind that desires power and separation from God, its creator. It disguises the source of the sickness by making its body seem sick and concentrates on healing the sick body, thus reinforcing the ego’s belief that we are bodies.
If you remember that we are spirits with minds, and recognize that health lies in accepting union with God and his creation, then you remove your ego and remember your already joined mind in God and all people, and in that remembrance of our eternal union with God and us, you are healed both at the physical and mental level.
• I write for all humanity. However, I am very mindful of racism. In contemporary America, sick, racist white folks strive to put down black people. In their minds, by putting them down, black folks ought to feel like they are nothing. Can a person calling you a put-down name make you feel put down? No. Nor is the name-caller exalted or put down. The son of God, you, all people, are beyond put down or put up. Nothing done in the dream, this world affects him. His worth is given to him by his father, God, not by human beings; there is nothing that misguided, sick, egoistic human beings can do that can detract from his eternal worth in God.
Note
The ideas I broached in this paper have been detailed in my other writings. Helen Schucman, in her book A Course in Miracles, also elaborated on the ideas in her poetic way. I believe that Professor Schucman is probably the best writer on spiritual psychology; her ideas influenced my thinking on the subject.
