NELFUND’s Quiet Revolution – How Tinubu’s Student Loan Scheme is Empowering 1.6 Million Nigerian Youths
The Chairman of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Jim Ovia, has disclosed that millions of young Nigerians in tertiary institutions have benefited from the Federal Government’s student loan programme, one of the flagship social investment schemes under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
According to Ovia, over 1.63 million Nigerian students across public tertiary institutions have received more than ₦303 billion in interest-free loans. Speaking after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja, Ovia emphasized that the scheme is designed to prevent financial exclusion and assured Nigerians that it is not being abused.
Data released by the agency saddled with managing the scheme are stark and revealing:
Total Disbursed: Over ₦303 billion in interest-free loans
Total Beneficiaries: More than 1.63 million students
Target Audience: Undergraduates in federal and state universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
This scheme is a revolutionary intervention and investment in young people from vulnerable homes and families, enabling them to acquire education. To my mind, this is the greatest empowerment any government can give to its youth, as education opens up minds and hearts, and equips young people with what they need to fight illiteracy and break the shackles of ignorance that envelop the mind when it is not redeemed and emancipated.
This aligns perfectly with the perspective of the iconic Nelson Mandela, who famously stated: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Mandela believed education had the power to break barriers, challenge inequality and transform societies.
Despite NELFUND’s great strides, some Nigerians remain dismissive of what the government has done and is doing to address the multifaceted problems confronting the country, either because they deliberately choose to turn a blind eye or because they have elected to play petty politics and will not give any credit to the administration.
You can imagine a very intelligent former Governor dismissively stating that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will stop at Epe in Lagos State and would never reach Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, when indeed work on the highway has reached those two coastal states, with over 160 kilometres of work done in both states.
Opposition to government is an indispensable and necessary ingredient in a democratic ecosystem, but it should be constructive and should always engage with forethought, not chicanery intended to muddle the waters in order to draw the blood of those in government to the cheers of the rabble.
Conclusion: The NELFUND initiative is more than a loan; it is a strategic investment in human capital. By removing financial barriers to education, the Tinubu administration is laying a foundation for a more knowledgeable, skilled, and competitive generation that will drive Nigeria’s future development.
