I noticed something interesting I think I should share with you.
Governor Umar Bago has a distinctive strength.
He takes difficult decisions and faces long-standing problems that others have avoided.
His choice to rebuild and dualize the Bida–Kataeregi–Minna road is one such decision.
Only a determined governor would undertake this work.
The road has remained a serious infrastructure challenge for decades.
Previous governors of Niger State were unable to confront the problem of the Bida-Kataeregi-Minna road directly.
But Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has shown clear political will in addressing the long-standing problems of the Minna–Kataeregi–Bida road.
For many years this important corridor suffered repeated deterioration. Earlier efforts brought only limited relief.
The road’s history shows that the problem was not new.
An academic study published in 2013 recorded earlier work on the road. This included earthworks in 1983 and a reconstruction contract of ₦1.8 billion in 2005.
Despite these efforts, the road continued to deteriorate seriously over the years.
This record helps us recognize the value of Governor Bago’s decision. He chose full reconstruction and dualization instead of limited repairs.
Under Governor Bago’s leadership the Niger State Government has chosen a more ambitious path: the construction of an 82-kilometre dual carriageway linking Minna and Bida.
The project is financed with US$163 million. This includes support from the Islamic Development Bank, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, and the Niger State Government. Such a commitment goes beyond routine repairs. It aims to create a modern road that can serve the state for years to come.
Minna is the state capital. Bida is a major commercial centre. A reliable dual carriageway between them can ease the movement of farm produce, lower transport costs, and strengthen trade and public services along the corridor.
Project partners have projected that travel time may fall by about half and vehicle operating costs by around one-third. These remain expected outcomes, yet they illustrate the practical gains the road is designed to deliver.
This road also serves as a major alternative route. It links Northern Nigeria with the South. When completed, the economic benefits at the national level will be very substantial.
Previous Niger State administrations did not resolve the problem of this Bida-Kataeregi-Minna road on this scale. Governor Bago’s decision to pursue full reconstruction and dualization therefore marks a firm step forward. The lasting success of the project will depend on its completion to proper standards and on sound future maintenance.
We acknowledge Governor Bago’s determination to replace years of temporary fixes with a lasting infrastructure solution.
The reconstruction and dualization of the Bida–Kataeregi–Minna road is clear evidence of Governor Bago’s strength in infrastructure development.
He has placed Niger State among the leading states in Northern Nigeria for infrastructure progress.
This reconstruction and dualization of the Bida-Kataeregi-Minna road will remain a major hallmark in the history of Niger State.
The people of Niger State have every reason to recognize and appreciate this determined leadership of Governor Bago.
Those who are wont to unduly attack Bago’s every move need to be fair to him. Fairness requires that we also recognize and appreciate his achievements whenever he delivers strong results.
