SENSATIONALISM AND CROWD-CHASING CANNOT REPLACE DUE LEGAL PROCEEDINGS IN A COURT OF LAW.
The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Zone 2 Command, has observed with concern the growing trend of media sensationalism, social media campaigns, name calling, libelious/defamatory utterances and public commentary surrounding the ongoing investigation into the Ajiran murder case.
While we recognize the public’s interest in seeing justice served, it is imperative to remind all stakeholders that the administration of criminal justice is the exclusive responsibility of the courts of law.
No individual or group should attempt to prejudge the outcome of an ongoing investigation or subject law enforcement officers to undue pressure through media trials and public intimidation.
The Nigeria Police Force has established investigative procedures, while the judiciary remains the constitutionally recognized institution vested with the authority to determine guilt or innocence based on admissible evidence.
Any attempt to replace these lawful processes with sensationalism or crowd sentiment poses a threat to the rule of law and the integrity of our justice system.
The PCRC Zone 2 therefore calls on members of the public, civil society organizations, the media, and all interested parties to exercise restraint, allow investigators to perform their duties professionally, and permit the courts to adjudicate the matter without interference.
Justice is best served when investigations are thorough, prosecutions are evidence-driven, and judicial decisions are reached without fear, favour, prejudice, or external influence.
The Ajiran murder case should be left for the courts to decide.
We remain confident that the law will ultimately prevail and that justice will be done in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
