Today, Monday 24th August, 2026, veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor Chief Taiwo Hassan a.k.a OGOGO was laid to rest in Ilaro, Ogun State. As tributes continue to pour in, we must ask: what happens after the tears?
Let me state clearly: this is not about apportioning blame. Baba fought gallantly and answered Allah’s call. My concern is the pattern we can no longer ignore.
I am not yet a known professional actor, but I have featured in about 4 productions. I am a lover of Nollywood. I have seen how our screen stars — the same people who project Nigeria’s culture to the world — often battle health challenges and end up making public appeals for medical funds. Sometimes the bills are huge. Sometimes they are not. But the desperation should never be the story.
Ogogo’s passing must birth a solution.
I therefore propose the immediate establishment of a Nollywood Health and Welfare Trust Fund — a system in partnership with Government, the Private Sector, and spirited Nigerians home and abroad. It must provide proactive solutions like regular medical check-ups and health insurance, and reactive solutions like emergency medical support for practitioners in need.
I am ready to actively participate and partner with AGN and all stakeholders to make this a reality.
Let Ogogo’s death be the last time a star has to beg to stay alive.
May his soul rest in peace.
