It is widely held that technology is influencing the educational system in the African traditional setting and it is an interesting and topical subject of discussion for all and sundry.
The importance of knowledge cannot be overemphasized in our present world. The introduction of technology to African countries eradicated substandard and inadequate knowledge and replaced with an improving and dynamic system:
1.MORDERN EDUCATION SYSTEM: Technology is stripping us of the requirement of a teacher and classroom setting where information is passed orally for student to learn from. This improved system renders physical gathering of student unnecessary. A recent research delivered the importance of outside of classroom learning which help student to develop diverse interpersonal skills and help them to be creative, independent and explore diverse means of learning unlike the African system, which employed the traditional means to impact knowledge. There were no organized, systemic and sophisticated skills. It was centred on the teacher giving guidelines, basics and instructions. Moreover, George Coures stated that technology will not replace great teachers but technology in the hands of great teachers can be transformational.
Therefore, it suffices to argue that balancing the traditional learning system with technology is creating a more productive system that is able to achieve great feat.
2. DOCUMENTATION: Technology helps proper documentation and recording system for future use. The impact of Management of Information System on modern education system is very salient. Furthermore, without Computers, Laptop and other technological devices, learning is difficult. These devices ensure the safety of documents from termites and ants. Confidential document are easily encrypted and protected from third party interference.
Maeve Cummings research revealed the importance of information system.
She stated the importance of Computer Sciences and Machines. “Information Technology can support the availability of the right information in the right place and at the right time. Unlike the ancient documentary system in papers and sheets, Technology introduced advanced system of documenting with optimum upgrade per time.
3. RESEARCH WORK: Technology has helped student with their research work. Online materials are readily available in schools and it is easier for student to engage this means to get all they need to study on at the mere click of the computer. Digital encyclopedia and the internet are very useful for the day to day learning and practice for students. Software application and other online groups like Academia, Pavillion etc. helps student to gather the materials they need for study in a particular aspect. A recent demographic research revealed that digital learning has since replaced printed textbook almost over a decade ago. physical library with typed and printed textbooks are not absolutely useful for student because it consumes more time compared to online study and research which are easier and better.
4.DISTANCE LEARNING: It was difficult in the past, was not possible to acquire a qualification online. Academic institutions are now able to impact knowledge to student of different countries due to improved technology. Imagine a teacher in the United States with his students in Nigeria or other African countries. In the past, distance learning was in the form of postal correspondence and telephone communication but there is a reformed system due to the upgrade of technology, most especially information communication technology and telecommunication. Ameritech states that resources are shrinking and learning requirement are expanding, Many educational institution are relying on communication technology such as distance learning to enhance effective and efficient education.
In conclusion, Technology has greatly influenced the education system. It is changing rapidly to a suitable model with easier responsibility on teachers, fun way of learning for student and distant interaction and communication e.t.c.
The question is what is education without technology?
It can be said that information communication technology has duly impacted the education system.
