For over 2000 years, Ijebu has built a civilization that fused trade, culture, spirituality, law, and Festival into one identity.

That is why in Yorubaland, when you say -IJEBU-, people don’t just hear a name. They hear history, pride, and excellence.

Here are the uniqueness:

1. EREDO
Sungbo Eredo, built in early century. It gives Ijebu a sense of ancient royalty, a projection of Ijebu as the first generation lineage in Yorubaland. It’s their pride.

2. THE TRADE
Ijebu was the first to trade with Europeans in 15th century. They are the pioneers of market hub that attracted people from Ife. Reason people come from other Yoruba towns to settle in Ijebuland.

3. THE KINGDOM
Ijebu is the first to grew into a kingdom, prominent with King Awujale who is described as the Spiritual Head, symbol of unity and Orisa Ijebu. Ijebu is a kingdom of many kingdoms.

4. THE FEDERATION
Ijebu is not one town, but a conglomeration of several autonomous towns that include Ode, Remo, Ugbo, Umusin, Uwoye, etc. These towns formed military confederation to repel invasion, beginning with Benin in 16th century.

5. THE WAR
Ijebu is prominent as the only entity that challenged the British hegemony. They blocked Lagos trade. Britain brought guns, Ijebu confronted with Juju. IJEBU no dey carry last.

6. THE BRAND
Ijebu Garri. Ponmo Ijebu. Ijebu Dialect. Ijebu Regberegbe. You know it when you see it. They are unique brands that glorify the heritage.

7. THE CULTURE
Ijebu is globally famous for their AGEMO and OJUDE OBA celebrations. It’s Ijebu culture to prostrate and pay homage to the kings.

8. IJEBU PHILOSOPHY
The Ijebu philosophy is spiritual in nature. This is the ritual of negotiating with God, nature, and ancestors for prosperity. That is reason you hear, Kekere Ijebu, Owo ni.

9. IJEBU TABOO
Ijebus don’t bear Ojo as name. It’s a taboo for a woman to enter Sungbo conclave. It’s sacrilegious for women to see AGEMO sacred ritual groove. It’s taboo for Awujale to eat in the public. That’s what makes Ijebu unique.

10. BIBLICAL REFERENCE
Ijebu as a name is mentioned in the Bible. It corroborates the claim of Ijebu pioneers migrating from the East before influx of people from Ife. So, Ijebu is global.
