A few days ago in Abuja, four men wearing police uniform made the mistake of stopping the wrong person.
They thought they were just extorting another “ordinary Nigerian.”
They didn’t know it was the *Chairman of the ICPC, Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN).*
They forced him to withdraw *N53,000* at a POS, paid the charges, and shared the loot like common criminals.
But this story is not about their shame.
This story is about what happened next. And that is why Nigeria must pay attention.
*THE COMMENDATION: NPF DID WHAT FEW INSTITUTIONS DARE TO DO*
The FCT Commissioner of Police, *Ahmed Sanusi*, did not hide it. He did not cover it. He did not transfer them quietly.
At a press conference today Monday, he called them exactly what they are: *“thieves who have no business wearing the police uniform.”*
He announced that they were arrested, detained, and that *dismissal is coming.*
Let that sink in.
Even when the victim was the Chairman of ICPC — the nation’s top anti-corruption agency — the NPF under *IGP Tunji Disu* chose truth over image, discipline over cover-up.
This is leadership.
This is why the *Nigeria Police Force remains the leading security institution in Nigeria* when it comes to exposing and dealing with rot within its own ranks publicly and promptly.
No sacred cows. No big man. No connection.
Crime is crime. And the uniform does not grant immunity.
IGP Tunji Disu’s zero-tolerance directive is also being enforced: _No indiscriminate phone searches. No illegal checkpoints. Report misconduct and we will act._
That is the kind of policing Nigerians have been begging for.
*THE HARD TRUTH: THIS IS WHAT MILLIONS FACE DAILY*
While we commend this arrest, we must also be honest.
The reason this case went viral is because the victim was “highly placed.”
But what about the student extorted at 1am in Oshodi?
What about the trader forced to “settle” at Banex every week?
What about the young man whose phone was seized and ransacked on the roadside?
For many ordinary Nigerians, encounters with *rogues in uniform* are a daily tax. Fear, not safety. Extortion, not protection.
The FCT CP said it himself: _“They left their duty posts, clustered together, and created an illegal checkpoint.”_
That is not policing. That is armed robbery with a badge.
*THE REAL SOLUTION: MERIT, NOT “CONNECTION”*
If we want more of this kind of decisive action, and less of the misconduct, we must go to the root:
*Our recruitment process must change.*
Today, too many people enter the Force not through merit, physical fitness, and character screening — but through “who you know” and “which politician signed for you.”
Result: We recruit men and women who see the uniform as a license to steal, not a call to serve.
We need a NPF where:
1. *Entry is by merit only* — exams, background checks, psychological tests, and integrity verification.
2. *Training emphasizes ethics* — that you serve citizens, you don’t prey on them.
3. *Welfare is prioritized* — so officers are not tempted to “feed on the road.”
4. *Whistleblowing works* — so citizens can report without fear, just as the CP advised.
When we recruit character, we will have fewer press conferences announcing arrests of our own.
*CONCLUSION: THIS IS THE STANDARD. KEEP IT.*
To *IGP Tunji Disu* and the *FCT Police Command*: Thank you.
Thank you for showing that the NPF can police itself. Thank you for proving that no one is above the law — not even when the victim is the anti-corruption Czar.
This Abuja case must not be a one-off. Let it be the template.
Arrest. Prosecute. Dismiss. Name and shame.
Nigerians are tired of slogans. We want systems.
We want a Police Force that protects the poor with the same energy it protects the powerful.
The NPF has taken one bold step.
Now let us reform recruitment, improve welfare, and build a Force where wearing the uniform means honor — not horror.
*To the good officers still serving with integrity: We see you. We salute you.*
*To the bad ones: Your days are numbered.*
A new Nigeria is possible. And it starts with a Police Force that leads by example.
