Drug Law Enforcement: A Federal Responsibility:
The enforcement of drug laws is not the responsibility of the Cross River State Government, contrary to what some members of the Cross River State House of Assembly would have the public believe. As lawmakers, it is imperative for members of the House to acquaint themselves with the basic principles of the Nigerian Constitution and constitutional law, so that they do not make Cross River State a mockery within the Nigerian Federation.
For the avoidance of doubt, the responsibility for the control, regulation, and enforcement of drug laws in Nigeria lies exclusively with the Federal Government. In this regard, the Federal Government has established two agencies to carry out this mandate: the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
The Cross River State Government, however, can collaborate and cooperate with these agencies to tackle the problem of drug abuse in Yakurr Local Government Area, which has reached endemic proportions. Furthermore, certain political elites who are complicit in the widespread drug abuse pandemic in Cross River State must desist from their nefarious activities. They should stop encouraging young people to believe that wealth can be attained through indulgence in drug culture.
Conclusion
Drug abuse is a national crisis that requires coordinated federal enforcement and responsible state-level collaboration. It is only through such synergy, coupled with the cessation of harmful political influence, that the menace of drug abuse can be effectively curtailed in Cross River State and beyond.
