On 21 March 2026, Iran launched an intermediate-range missile targeting the joint United States–United Kingdom military base on Diego Garcia, located in the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The strike was a retaliatory measure following the United Kingdom’s recent decision to allow the United States to use its bases to launch attacks on Iranian missile sites. Diego Garcia lies approximately 3,800 miles from Iran and has been a strategic military installation jointly operated by the United States and the United Kingdom for nearly six decades.
The Chagos Archipelago has long been the subject of an international sovereignty dispute between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Mauritius, which gained independence from Britain in 1968. Prior to granting independence, the United Kingdom separated the Chagos Islands from Mauritius, forcibly removed the inhabitants, and retained control of Diego Garcia for military purposes. In 2019, the International Court of Justice ruled in favor of Mauritius, affirming its sovereignty over the archipelago. After years of diplomatic negotiations, the United Kingdom eventually agreed to comply with the judgment, signing a treaty that granted it a 99-year lease of Diego Garcia in exchange for substantial financial compensation to Mauritius.
The decision by London to honor the ICJ ruling drew criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who argued that relinquishing sovereignty weakened Western strategic interests in the Indian Ocean. Nevertheless, the base remains central to U.S. and U.K. military operations in the region.
Iran’s missile strike on Diego Garcia underscores its determination to demonstrate that its military capabilities remain intact despite ongoing pressure from the United States and Israel. The attack highlights both the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean base and the broader geopolitical tensions surrounding sovereignty, military alliances, and regional security.
