INEC’s 2027 Election Timetable: A Test of Party Preparedness

by Okoi Obono-Obla

Today, I was a guest on TVC to discuss the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 general elections, as well as the schedule for political parties to conduct primary elections to nominate their candidates for the presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly contests.

The timetable is quite compact, with timelines set very close together, raising genuine concerns that some political parties may struggle to comply due to poor preparation and internal challenges. This has already led to opposition parties strongly criticizing the timetable, even after INEC conceded to shift the presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly elections by one month from the earlier dates, following objections to holding elections during the holy month of Ramadan in February and March 2027.

My position was clear: no political party should complain of inadequate time. They have had four full years since the 2023 general elections to prepare for the new season. If political parties are professionally managed, run, and administered by competent and visionary executives who understand their responsibilities, then we should not hear complaints that INEC’s timetable is too tight for their comfort.

Furthermore, if political parties conduct credible, transparent, free, and fair primaries, and embed effective conflict resolution mechanisms in their constitutions, then the number of pre‑election litigations burdening the already over‑stretched courts will be significantly reduced. In that case, the period provided by the Electoral Act and reflected in INEC’s timetable for resolving pre‑election disputes should not pose any problem at all.

In conclusion, the real issue is not the timetable itself but the preparedness, professionalism, and internal discipline of the political parties. The 2027 election timetable is ultimately a test of party preparedness.
