The role of ones body in the formation of ones self concept

If you are an African, after reading this essay that I composed in my mind as I did my regular walk, yesterday, please pause and cogitate on it. It is really time that Africans begin contributing to the world of ideas and stop living to eat, have sex and pretending to be important persons, who they are not; they need to transcend mere animal existence and become human beings, those who use their thinking to understand the universe.

THE BIOMECHANICS OF THE HUMAN BODY AND MIND’S RESPONSE TO IT DETERMINES THE INDIVIDUAL’S PERSONALITY TYPE

Ozodi Osuji

The temperature out there (in Anchorage, Alaska at 5PM, November 8, 2021) is 26 degrees Fahrenheit. I just got in from a two and half hours walk on a trail in the woods.

As I was walking back home, I began paying attention to my lower body, from my waist to my legs. I noticed some pain in my knees and ankles.

I became aware that my body is like a machine with many parts to It, all the parts fitted to work together; when they are healthy, they work well together. When over worked they ache. Two and half hours walk in the cold could be considered over exertion and my body ached and yearned for rest.

The human body is like an automobile with a chassis of skeletal bones, fitted together like someone designed them to work together and when they are healthy their owner is not aware of the nature of the machine but when unhealthy, sick or getting old the body does not work well.

Old bodies are like old cars, falling apart and needing a lot of maintenance and repairs.

MIND MOVES BODY

The human mind enters body and lives through the biomechanics of the body. I know that I assumed that mind is apart from body; there are those who believe that body produced mind (epiphenomenalism). Neither they nor I have evidence supporting our assumptions.

From its interaction with the specific nature of the body it enters, the human mind forms a personality; the personality adapts to the reality of the inherited body that mind operates in.

Where there is a problematic body, the mind tries to use additional mental energy to move the body.

When the individual feels weak due to sicknesses, he uses his mind energy to move his body forward, backward and sideways. He must exert a lot of mental energy to get his body to move. In the process he develops a desire for power and superiority (ala Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology).

Power and superiority are what the individual with a weak body needs to make his body mechanics work.

Where the body is healthy the mind energy needed to operate it is minor but where it is problematic it requires a lot of mental energy to move the body to engage in the activities of daily living.

The individual’s behavior pattern, his personality is the by-product of his mind exerting energy to move his body around.

What psychoanalysts call neurosis and psychiatrists call personality disorders, in fact, psychoses are the product of mind energy trying to move its inherited problematic body around.

In delusion disorder the individual sees his body as not cooperating and uses tremendous mental energy to make his body move and do what he needs to do to survive on earth. The deluded and paranoid person develops desire for power and superiority. His power and superiority are mostly fantasy; he pretends that he is powerful and superior to other persons hence is deluded.

THE HUMAN DESIRE FOR WORTH IS ROOTED IN MIND OPERATING FROM INFERIOR AND WORTHLESS BODY

Human beings are creatures that recognize that their bodies have no intrinsic value and worth; their bodies look beautiful, but they are made of flesh that would die, decay, and smell awfully.

Body is nothing, body has no worth. Human beings, aware that as bodies they have no worth, use their minds to desire worth. Thus, all over the world people seek worth to mask their underlying sense of worthlessness in body.

What it means to be human is to be aware that one existentially has no worth but to seek worth.

Tell a man that he has worth, by respecting him, and he likes you, but tell him that he has no worth, by not respecting him, and he would not rest until he has taken you down.

NOT SEEKING WORTH IN EGO AND BODY

If the individual recognizes his problematic body and the fact that he is using enormous mental energy trying to move his body around and is seeking worth and power based on his ego separated self, and stops doing so, he relaxes his mind and body.

Mind can totally detach from his body and let the problematic body lie there and not try to move it around; that body becomes inert and is like a log of wood.

The individual can decide and no longer use his mind to seek worth for his separated ego self in body.

Let go of the false, deluded self and be egoless; there is still  a self in one when the separated ego is let go but it is a self that thinks, speaks and acts from one’s real self, the son of God; that self is peaceful and happy; it knows that it is one with all selves in spirit; in ego the self has illusory, separated selves.

THE SON OF GOD TAKES NOTHINGNESS AS HIS HOUSE

The son of God manifests in body, in feces and tries to make his new house important.

If he recognizes that his body is nothing and that his ego is that which tries to make nothingness important and stops desiring them and give them up, he will awaken to his real self, a formless self.

There is no ego self in existence; separation has not occurred and separated selves do not exist,  they are dream selves; what seems real in dreams is not real in wake life; what is real is the dreamer, the formless sons of God who are deluded and take  their imaginary bodies and nonexistent egos as real and defend them and in defense of them make them seem real to them.

One must now overlook one’s body and ego, big or small, for they do not exist, and awaken to one’s real self, the son of God, a formless self who is part of a formless God.

THE PURPOSE OF BODILY PAINS, ACHES, SICKNESS IS TO TRY TO HEAL THE BODY AND THUS MAKE IT REAL FOR ONE

There are people born with numerous bodily aches, pains and sicknesses; they struggle to heal their bodies and, in the process, make their bodies real for them; they develop grandiose self-concepts, deluded selves that see themselves as better than other people and defend their desired mighty ego selves, defend nonexistent selves; this is what delusion disorder is (psychosis has two components, delusion and hallucination).

Now they must not defend their bodies and their sicknesses; they must let body and ego go; if they do so they awaken to their real selves, formless sons of God.

This is what Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism and Zen try to accomplish, get people to jettison identification with their false self, ego, and body to experience their real selves, formless selves that are part of a formless being that folk in the West call God.
