The Opportunity of a live Time

Written by

From the opening ceremony to the fixtures proper it was a all celebration galore, and the felicitations continued after each victory .The Nigerian contingents did do us proud that was why the vuvuzelars of the supporters and other well wishers continued to thunder away up till the final match. The Super eagles as we have known them to have affirmed by their victory and consequent lifting of the trophy just like other contenders had their twist and turns during the tournament, this resulted into the call for the sack of head coach Steven Keshi as it has been the Custom of restless and some worth impatient Nigerians on one part and a constantly dwindling down and up team on the other. For most of the players and indeed the technical crew, their carriers have gone through the fire and as expected in that procedure, would become brighter in value, as each ones worth in global football market would certainly doubled or quadrupled as would be seen in the coming days, of particular mention in this piece would be the fortunes of those players plying their trade in the Nigerian Domestic leagues.

For those players who were so privileged to make the final selection for the tournament and by extension this wind also blows to their respective club sides. Such players as Chigozie Agbim (goalkeeper), Godfrey Oboabona,Azubike Eguekwe (Defenders),Reuben Gabriel (Midfielder), Ejike Uzoenyi and Sunday Mba (Attackers) are the beneficiaries. Steven Keshi Started the countdown of the list of home based players to which this final six made the final selection few months back, If this players were told that they would make the list out of the lot they may not agree, or some might call it another wild goose chase, as several players who maybe even more skilful and talented than they didn’t make the final list. As it is written in scripture, many are called but few are chosen indeed.

Other significant events also emerged during the sojourn of this make shift eagles or re-building team as the technical crew had come to call them in the recently concluded African Cup Of Nations (AFCON 2013), One of such is what i call the “ called up from the called” this was evidently played out through the Nigerian games  during the tournament, aside the fielding of Godfrey Oboabona which helped to solidify the defence, situations aroused that led to certain decisive call by Steven Keshi, like the tactical switch of Sunday Mba for Nosa igiebor in the attacking midfield sphere for the remaining group games and also during the knockout stages.

Without taking away the impact of foreign based players in the team like Michael obi, Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike , the revelations of the entire team may not be concluded without recognising the role of the so called “local lads” and Sunday Mba stood out, it was his decisive second goal of the match and his first of the tournament against  the star studded Ivory coast side that sealed victory for Nigeria and his goal in the final match made the super Eagles come out tops to lift the cup for the third time in the nation’s History, it’s worthy to note that the incoherency in the team pattern of play particularly in the game against Bokina-Faso was gravitating towards the disadvantage of the eagles, but it took the ingenuity and  “new die hard spirit” of the local based players to survive at those times, and of the six Mba stood out, and is worthy to take a bow just like the others who featured. And feeders coming in are suggesting the player is been bamboozled by scouts, nonetheless the few or more number of clubs that may approach the player already in his mid –twenties, he could eventually fulfill his dream of playing professional football for the remaining years of his carrier, a fit most of his local pears couldn’t achieve.

All of these should be attributed to what preachers call “a step of faith”, to face the challenge and rise up to the occasion, and from the an occasion this could go on to be an experience of frequent events for Sunday Mba, we could safely branch at a stop to say that, life would always present opportunities and most of this pass by unnoticed. It was such a chance that a local player grabbed with both hands. Because as someone also had said that “The opportunity of a life time most be seized in the life time of that opportunity”, and all of these avail themselves in all areas of human endeavour.
