We are not bodies

A Course In Miracles Lesson 199

I Am Not A Body, I Am Free

Freedom must be impossible as long as you perceive a body as yourself. The body is a limit. Who would seek for freedom in a body looks for it where it cannot be found. The mind can be made free when it no longer sees itself as in a body, firmly tied to it and sheltered by its presence. If this were the truth, the mind was vulnerable indeed!

The mind that serves the Holy Spirit is unlimited forever, in all ways, beyond the laws of time and space, unbound by any preconceptions, and with strength and power to do whatever it is asked. Attack thoughts cannot enter such a mind, because it has been given to the Source of love, and fear can never enter in a mind that has attached itself to love. It rests in God. And who can be afraid who lives in Innocence, and only loves?

It is essential for your progress in this course that you accept today's idea, and hold it very dear. Be not concerned that to the ego it is quite insane. The ego holds the body dear because it dwells in it, and lives united with the home that it has made. It is a part of the illusion that has sheltered it from being found illusory itself.

Here does it hide, and here it can be seen as what it is. Declare your innocence and you are free. The body disappears, because you have no need of it except the need the Holy Spirit sees. For this, the body will appear as useful form for what the mind must do. It thus becomes a vehicle which helps forgiveness be extended to the all-inclusive goal that it must reach, according to God's plan.

Cherish today's idea, and practice it today and every day. Make it a part of every practice period you take. There is no thought that will not gain thereby in power to help the world, and none which will not gain in added gifts to you as well. We sound the call of freedom round the world with this idea. And would you be exempt from the acceptance of the gifts you give?

The Holy Spirit is the home of minds that seek for freedom. In Him they have found what they have sought. The body's purpose now is unambiguous. And it becomes perfect in the ability to serve an undivided goal. In conflict-free and unequivocal response to mind with but the thought of freedom as its goal, the body serves, and serves its purpose well. Without the power to enslave, it is a worthy servant of the freedom which the mind within the Holy Spirit seeks.

Be free today. And carry freedom as your gift to those who still believe they are enslaved within a body. Be you free, so that the Holy Spirit can make use of your escape from bondage, to set free the many who perceive themselves as bound and helpless and afraid. Let love replace their fears through you. Accept salvation now, and give your mind to Him Who calls to you to make this gift to Him. For He would give you perfect freedom, perfect joy, and hope that finds its full accomplishment in God.

You are God's Son. In immortality you live forever. Would you not return your mind to this? Then practice well the thought the Holy Spirit gives you for today. Your brother's stand released with you in it; the world is blessed along with you, God's Son will weep no more, and Heaven offers thanks for the increase of joy your practice brings even to it. And God Himself extends His Love and happiness each time you say:

I am not a body. I am free.
I hear the Voice that God has given me,
and it is only this my mind obeys.

This lesson says that human beings are not bodies but are spirit.  From other parts of A course in miracles we are told that when we separated from God, spirit, we invented body and now seem to be in body.

On earth we seem to have separated selves, egos and those separated selves seem in bodies. As long as one seems in body one is an ego separated self. One is caught in the world of separation.

For one to liberate  one's self from the separated self-one must now deny that one is body, hence the lesson asks one to affirm; I am not  body (hence not ego).

Body is a limit on spirit; if I am not ego and body I am free and limitless.

Here is what I know from personal experience. The moment a human child is conceived in the womb his spirit identifies with the body in that womb. From that moment on one identifies as ego separated self. Body enables the individual to seem to have a separated self.

The moment a child is conceived his ego and personality are formed; body shapes ego and personality.

We are born with our egos and personalities already in place; society does not shape our egos and personalities, our bodies do, provided that we understand that even body is shaped by our collective minds. For now let us accept the obvious, body shapes personality and ego.

But a person can choose to not identify with the ego and body and free himself from his attachment to body and ego and live from his higher self, the Holy Spirit (whole spirit part of his mind, not the separated spirit called ego).

Now one lives from the Holy Spirit, a part of one that does not identify with body and ego and is therefore not limited by the ego and body.  One now is not a body; one is now as God created one, spirit and is one with God.

Salvation means that one has given up ones hitherto identification with the ego and now has identified with unified spirit, God ( on earth called Holy Spirit); such a person then is freed from the ego and is now no longer in dense body but is now in light body.

The person can appear to be in body so as to be seen by other people in bodies and, as such, is able to teach them about the need to return to love by forgiving those in bodies and egos, overlooking them and experience spirit.

Vision is the pattern of seeing for those in light bodies, vision is spiritual seeing.

From the moment that Jesus began teaching, when his ministry began at gee 30, he had given up identification with body and ego and was now guided by the Holy Spirit.

He took on body appearance to teach his disciples what he wants to teach them about forgiveness and love.  He would appear to them in body and leave them and they do not know where he is but has disappeared from them (he lived in bodiless state).

But after his so-called crucifixion he now lives in light body (Christ vision, the son of God still in form but in purified light body) and appeared to them in that form.

I am not in the business of merely being poetic and restating what A course in miracles states; I want concrete statement of what the lesson is teaching?

It is teaching that a person can decide and go into meditation and deny that he is ego and body and accept that he is eternally part of God's unified spirit; if he truly denies the reality of his body and ego and does not desire them he can see his body disappear and he lives in unified spirit; and occasionally he would manifest in light form or in dense body to relate to those in bodies and teach them about love and forgiveness.

Can this be done, yes? Who has done it other than Jesus? Why don't I try to do it and verify it?
