Living fearlessly has many benefits

Written by

There are people whose lives are circumscribed by fear. Right from the moment that they are born they live in excessive fear. They anticipate what could harm them and take precautionary measures. As a result they live restricted, limited lives; they are always anticipating danger and running away from it. They do not live fully.

As children at school they are anxious and do not learn well; as adults at work they are anxious from their anticipation of danger from their co-workers, especially from their bosses; in society as a whole they perceive danger everywhere; for example, if a police car passes by they think that it is looking to get them into trouble so they always try to do the right thing and in the process live restricted lives.

In nature, fear alerts human beings and other animals to danger and urges them to take precautions, to take protective measures that enable them to survive.

If a person is totally fearless he probably will not be able to survive in this world, for he would not anticipate danger and take precautions to meet them hence survive.

Totally fearless children (perhaps, due to their body not releasing enough adrenalin to force them to experience fear) do not do things to protect themselves; they are reckless in their behaviors; their bodies are easily harmed and they die from injuries, and often die young.

People desire to live in bodies and fear harm of their bodies and death of their egos; fear tells them what to do to survive.

WITHOUT FEAR OF HARM AND DEATH THERE WOULD BE NO NEED FOR ORGANIZED SOCIETY

Governments are set up by people to protect them; if people did not anticipate danger to their lives, did not anticipate harm and death from things that can hurt them, they would not have government to protect them; there would be no police, courts, jails and all the arms of government that protect people from each other's ability to harm them.

Governments are there to protect people; those in government realizing how fearful people are intimidate them; leaders often use terror to arouse fear of punishment and death and in so doing get people to do as told to do.

Most laws are obeyed out of fear, fear of what governments would do to one, such as jail one or even kill one if one disobeys the laws made by the rulers of the land.

HUMAN LIFE ON EARTH IS MOSTLY A NEGATIVE THING; IT IS NEGATIVE BECAUSE IT IS PREDICATED ON FEAR; HOWEVER, THERE IS A NON- FEAR ASPECT OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR; FOR EXAMPLE, DOING PURE SCIENCE IS NOT MOTIVATED BY FEAR, THERE IS A POSITIVE ASPECT TO LIFE

Useful as fear is it is also a negative thing. In fear one is in a survival mode and has little or  no mental energy left to relax and actually explore  one's world, or do abstract study, such as science.  It requires fearlessness hence calm mind to be able to study the sciences and technology.

Since some people are born with more capacity for fear their learning of abstract subjects such as science is impaired. Study of science requires a calm body and mind; therefore, fearful persons (with over aroused, anxious bodies, with adrenalin kicked up) must seek ways to reduce their fear level, not eliminate it.

When you are not in a state of fear you can think clearly and do science; life becomes a joy. For example, I woke up this morning in a calm, peaceful state of mind; I decided to look at fear in a dispassionate way hence this piece.  In as much as the information provided by this essay is useful it is indicative of what we can accomplish when our minds are not clogged by fear and our frantic efforts to survive. Scientists are generally in less fearful state of minds and thus can think abstractly and study our world in a dispassionate, objective and impersonal manner. They thus give us useful information about our world.

Fearful and anxious persons seldom do well in science; they generally do well in the arts, such as write novels where they are lost in the world of fantasy, the make belief world. Most writers are anxious neurotics. That is why folks do not take artists seriously; you may, for example, enjoy reading Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka and William Shakespeare but at the back of your mind you know that they are fearful fellows and you do not take them seriously. People respect courageous persons, such as Winston Churchill, not anxious neurotic writers. Society likes its artists but do not make them its political leaders, for people do not want cowards as their leaders.

FEARLESSNESS PRODUCES CALM AND PEACEFUL BODY

When you are fearless your body is relatively calm and peaceful, you are not anticipating danger so your body is not pouring out adrenalin asking you to run away; you are calm and relaxed biochemically. You talk calmly (in fear you talk rapidly).

FEAR IS INCREASED BY EGOISM

Fear is enhanced by egoism. Those with too much ego perceive unnecessary danger to their existence and do things to survive.

Egoism is a result of identification with body. If you do not identify with body you do not anticipate danger to your body and thus you are relaxed.

Clearly, some bodies are more prone to fear, to pouring out adrenalin and being in the state of fear and or anger.

MIND CAN REDUCE OR EVEN ELIMINATE FEAR AND CALM THE BODY

Regardless of whether you inherited a body that is prone to excessive fear, a body that quickly pours out excitatory neurochemicals such as adrenalin, or not, you can use your mind to reduce your level of fearfulness. How

You use your mind to ask your body to calm down and be peaceful. You use your mind to tell you that you are not in danger hence should not be fearful; you use your mind to reinterpret what hitherto caused you fear and now believe that it is not going to harm you. This is using cognition to deal with fear (cognitive therapists' advice using this method of coping with fear).

YOU CAN DECIDE TO GIVE UP YOUR EGO AND THEN NO LONGER FEEL FEAR

You can use your mind to decide that you do not want your big ego and let it go; you can decide and stop defending the ego.

When you stop desiring and defending the ego you reduce your fearfulness; if you completely do not desire life in body and ego and stop defending your body and ego you would have total fearlessness and be in perfect peace.

Heaven is life outside body and ego and therefore having no defense of body and ego hence living in perfect peace and joy.

Heaven is abstract; we are currently living in body and ego, so, let us talk about what is doable here. We can reduce our fear, and live less anxiously; we can reduce anticipating danger and our bodies and minds would become calm; in that calm frame of mind and body we learn better, do scientific research and live more fully.
