Igbo Traditional Marriage Best Practices

Written by
This article says how the Igbo of Nigeria engage in doing and celebrating marriage through traditional ethos. First posted in Nigerian Masterweb in September 2012 by Dr. Chris Chiwetelu of Calgary in Canada; I cull the article here to further show the power of tradition in shaping values that endure in marriage and society. Why there is a high rate of quitting or working out of marriage given any sign of stress and hardship these days, we try to understand that in societies that adore marriage and family, they attempt to absorb the stresses through kinship and collective immersion and…
I love reggae music, especially songs by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Lucky Dube and count myself as a reggae fan. It was in the morning of Friday October 19, 2007. I was going to work on board our staff bus when I heard the news over the radio that Lucky Dube, the South African-born reggae musician, had died the previous day Thursday October 18, 2007! I peremptorily dismissed the news as untrue, hoping that it was either a reverie or I did not hear well. But it turned out to be true, for the sad news was repeatedly aired…

How not to miss calls and annoy people?

Written by
Mobile phones can extremely annoying sometimes. Recently, I was travelling by public transport and selected the loudest ring possible not to miss an important interview call. Obviously that wasn't a problem, it actually started when I was late for a meeting at office and just rushed into the board room with a baggage of file. Bang, within minutes my phone started to play a crazy loud tone which I had selected earlier for the noisy location. I lost two things that day, that interview call and my job. Well of course phone was not the only reason, my boss was…

Why Black Folks Are Angry At Me

Written by
Black folks are angry at me because I exposed their eternal racket of behaving badly while blaming other persons for the outcome of their bad deeds; they do what ordinarily makes people feel bad about themselves but because they deny responsibility for their actions and project causality for them to external others they see themselves as innocent, indeed, as perfect persons despite their bad behaviors. I have shown the world the game these people are playing; I have explicated their chief defense mechanisms, such as denial, projection, victimhood, blaming and feeling of false innocence. I have removed their psychological cover…

Systems of Support

Written by
Sometimes I don’t think I took enough time to think why someone selected me to be their friend, lover, or associate. I should have. It seems as if I was always just happy to be wanted or needed that I never questioned why. Once in a circle, or assigned to a role, for some reason, I was determined to stay “on the job.” I was so afraid of failure that I didn’t mind losing. Today, I examine opportunities and it seems as if the things freely given are those which have the greatest cost in the long run. Play now,…

5 Reasons: Why to Buy Children Groceries Online!

Written by
Online grocery shopping is quite on a rage these days in most of the countries. For smarter moms, it is one of the best ways to find products that their children would love. However this is not the only reason why you should be buying your kitchen supplies online. In fact, there is a long list to why you should; here we are going to discuss some of them. 1. Freedom of Choice The first reason is absolutely a no-brainier. Mommies understand how difficult it could be to find a specific variant of chocolate biscuit that little one saw in…

Homosexual British Prime Minister

Written by
This is in response to those comparing themselves with lizards and other base animals. Lesbianism or homosexuality is a serious crime in African traditions. It is anti-human, anti-nature, and worse than bestial, because it is not the norm in the rest of the animal kingdom, and if it happens, itis only by default or in abnormal circumstances such as the freak of nature, mental or phychological ailment, human interference, warp sense of self or a self-destructive streak, as is likely in humansequating self with lizards. The most popular animals that humans are screwing at the moment, (humans initiated the move…

Human Beings Will Always Do What Human Beings Do

Written by
While walking on a sandy beach and observing all the beautiful people sunning their bodies my mind went into its normal philosophical mode, asking why the people take all the trouble to take care and exhibit their bodies seeing that those bodies will eventually die. After cogitating on the paradox that is man I concluded that human beings have always done certain things and will probably continue doing them and that one is best served if one accepted them doing those things rather than waste ones time trying to change them. People will always do what value their bodies and…
This essay says that normally people think that they would see themselves as important when they attain external goals, especially goals valued by their significant others and society. They pursue such goals with vigor and when they attain them they realize that they do not improve their opinion of their worth. The essay says that individuals must accept themselves as they are without regard to the attainment of anything outside of them. Self-worth is a gift one gives to one’s self, not a gift given to one by other persons. Only you can give you self-worth; other people cannot give…

Perfection Of Humans And The End Of History

Written by
This essay says that the universe and its people must be imperfect to exist, that were they to suddenly become perfect they would have no more need to exist. Life on earth would be totally boring were people perfect in their behaviors. It is human imperfection and people’s tendency to make mistakes and learn from them and then make further mistakes and learn from them, ad infinitum that makes history an on going venture. If people were perfect and did not make mistakes history would come to an end. The lesson is to quit expecting folks to be perfect and…

Aso Ebi On My Mind (Part One)

Written by
Keynote lecture delivered at the African Textiles Exhibition of Carleton University's Arts Gallery, February 16, 2011 It was one of those auspicious summer days when the horribly English weather of Vancouver, British Columbia, uncharacteristically decides to wear a tropical smile. Sometimes there is a computer glitch in heaven and the sun mysteriously defies all that dour, cloy, and grey wetness and marches across the permanent penumbra that the residents of Vancouver call the sky. For those unable to afford that vital occasional escape to the tropical heat and brightness of Mexico or Hawai'i, such rare sun-sodden days offer an occasion…
It is Aso Ebi season in Georgia – summer weather, kids on holidays, and parties aplenty. Every weekend features a variety of weddings, birthday parties, association meetings, and funerals; each an opportunity to participate in the buying and selling of aso ebi or ‘Aso-ebinomics.’ Defined, it is the art or perhaps craft of financing the purchase of aso ebis. It should not to be confused with ‘Ebinomics’ or the hemorrhaging of one’s finances by relatives both real and imagined. Aso-ebinomics encompasses both the tangible and intangible profits and accruals from the purchasing and trafficking of Aso-Ebi. Now, when we say…
This essay points out that black folks tend to serve their individual interests and seldom love and care for other black folks. Young black kids growing up in loveless environments feel abandoned by the black adults that did not serve their social interests. They feel angry at the black folks that abandoned their needs. One way they show their anger at being abandoned by black folks is to commit crimes against black folk hence high black on black crimes. Black Folks Abandon Their People; Abandonment Contributes To Black On Black CRIMES Ozodi Osuji There is an epidemic of black on…
Building on how I, an African, relate to my fellow Africans and black persons in general, I point out that it is understandable for white folks to see Africans and black folks as culturally behind them and hence avoid their company. The paper says that the most rational thing to do is work to get black folks on par with white folks rather than discriminate against them. It says that we all need to be taught scientific culture so that we operate from a common scientific frame of reference hence get along with one another. If I Am A White…

Of Liars, Borrowers, and Thieves

Written by
My sister told me this one: A woman went to her pastor with the sole purpose of getting money from him. As soon as she arrived, she began soberly, “Pastor, I have never seen calamity like this in my life. My only sister died in the plane crash.” She paused and glanced at the Pastor. He looked reasonably concerned but not distressed. So she continued, “Since then, my mother has been in a coma in the hospital and I have been travelling to Akobo every day to visit her.” She checked again to find the Pastor leaning forward in his…
Figure 1 Singer Pepe & Nene Singers Pepê e Nenê with TV host Marília Gabriela As the debates over homosexuality, gay marriage and the rights of homosexuals continue to be a hot topic in the black community, particularly since President Obama’s recent support of gay marriage, there is also a fierce debate about making comparisons between the gay rights struggle and the black struggle from the 60s Civil Rights era. Some see similarities in the two struggles, while some label homosexuality “the new black” and still others dismiss any comparisons between the two. Do blacks and gays experience discrimination equally…

Same-Sex Marriage

Written by
Simply stated is treating all human beings like we like to be treated and keeping Government out of our private lives and bedrooms. As a freelance columnist who has predicted many times that Barack Obama will win again in November, it will be hypocritical of me to not meddle or comment on how the raging debate on same-sex marriage is likely to validate or invalidate my prediction on the outcome of the election. I happen not to believe that the election is going to be won or lost based on the economy alone and who out of the two candidates…
Driving is a serious responsibility with physical and mental abilities impacting on the driving activities of a driver. It is more than moving a vehicle and knowing how to use the accelerator, brake pedals and steering. Driving is at best when you have knowledge and required skills to drive competently in accordance with those rules and regulations guiding the public roads. A safe and responsible driver has responsibility which makes him a good citizen. Driving is a learned skill acquired with much practice. It is also more important to drive with due regards for safety and convenience of other road…

Father's Day? You Picked Him!

www.lavondastaples.com Sisters and brothers I would have been so very wrong if I had kept these things to myself. I couldn't hold it. I believe that I was brought through, by God, so that I may be a witness to you. Listen. Don't listen. The choice is up to you. After all, these are only the notes from nobody. Here we go, I didn't want to reveal this part of my autobiography - gotta save something for the paying customers but the spirit has done tole me that it is now time to reveal. My mother was a single mother…
Abstract The 2012 trial of John Edwards brings up the nasty issues of what love has to do with marriage and family stability. Kissing, touching, and hugging between unwed couples constitute ‘pornea’ – a sin rooted in disobedience to God’s laws. Our scriptures clearly frown against these sins that are provoked by ‘pornea’ including; incest, rape, sodomy, bestiality, homosexuality, fornication and adultery. We are told that all of these sexual misnomers produce sexual gratification for those who engage in them, but they are clearly against God’s order. Introduction The 2012 trial of John Edwards brings up the nasty issues of…
Of significant note is that many of the members of the recently formed online group on facebook, Matured Minds (MM) never met before. Ditto its seemingly offshoot, The Real You (TRY). And even those who knew one another saw last several decades ago. Curiously, and interestingly, they are enlightened Nigerians spread across the globe, with many of them, besides Nigeria, dwelling in Europe, America and other continents, where they eke out a living and strive harder to fly the flag of their fatherland. Significantly, they cut across various professions – which included media, engineering, business, medicine, nursing, ICT and administration,…
Abstract There is enough volume of work for a special core of pressmen who devote their investigative journalism specialized on anti-corruption issues. The picture of Ibori will make any good front page news item. But then, a deeper look at the budget and financial statements of an anti-fraud agency will make the newspaper sound serious. After all, we have so many versions of the Financial News today, even locally published in Nigeria. This is part of my contributions to the May 2012 debate on Insecurity in Nigeria. http://www.facebook.com/groups/nigeriansunitedac/doc/388706144501322/ Discussion Looking at the supposed picture of James Ibori posted by Chido…
“When it comes to abusive people, men are like battleships and women are like submarines” – Stephen from Dr. Laura’s Show I felt betrayed…disrobed…violated. I wept. We had planned to host a workshop together. And as the deadline approached, she began to spread sick rumors about me. “She told people that I was making unilateral decisions and didn’t consult with her on anything. She said she’d put $5,000 of her own money into the project and I couldn’t account for any of it. She said the materials to be used for the occasion had arrived but I refused to share…
This essay says that the good and bad persons one sees out there mirror one’s own on good and bad thinking. It says that seeing the negative consequences some persons behaviors bring to them helps one to realize the negative consequences one’s behaviors bring to one. The goal is for one to change one’s behaviors and model changed behaviors to all people, so that eventually all behave lovingly and from it obtain the peace of God that no human ego can understand. One Should Be Grateful To All People, Good And Bad People Ozodi Thomas Osuji There are essentially two…
We, Africans have a tendency to blame all our woes on our less than 100 years of colonial experience (an experience that actually introduced us to the rest of the world). Nigeria was ruled by Great Britain for less than 60 years (1900-1960) and in our minds those sixty years is now responsible for everything wrong with us, including wrong in the past fifty thousand years of our prior existence as human beings! (Does this make sense to you? Of course it does not make sense; it is a rationalization and, as such, arrant nonsense!) We have a tendency to…
