It has never hit me like this before. All of a sudden church pews became empty, and I could not but try to remember who loved to seat where! I had given back-to-school gifts for many of our friends, especially those who have great aunties and uncles to my little all summer holidays long. So, we knew it will happen, but I never thought that the transitions will impact individuals in so many different ways as we now witness.
One parent was so excited that he would have to pay less in utility bills for a minute. Another parent was apprehensive that their 3 children were faced towards 3 different directions. One was leaving home for the first time, and another was bound for a sponsored year overseas. Yet, another parent was more worried about some potential spouse emerging from this experience.
Reflecting over some of these various concerns made me to wonder about what will be an appropriate counsel to give to the parents as well as every member of the congregation present. Funny enough, I found that the prayer of Jabez was about the most complete that anyone would get closer in responding to the anxieties and excitements of the season. It is perhaps the ultimate gift to send the children forth with.
It is true that we mostly remember this prayer for its destiny changing motivation. However, closer look at the prayer reveals its encompassing nature:
And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!" So God granted him what he requested (1 Chr. 4:13).
The God of Israel fails no one. We have chosen Him as our God, and He will answer our own prayers. The financial, moral, and spiritual support that our children look up to facilitate their adventures will not fail them. God will continue to provide for us the power of parenthood in order that we will serve as God's blessing for their lives. The Lord God will expand their coasts with valuable friends that will support them academically, intellectually and spiritually.
God will grant our children the ability to express and radiate godly love, because people that show love hardly cause pain to anyone. Even when misunderstandings occur, these will never be unforgivable.
The hand of God will never allow our children to fall into the hands of the evil one and his agents. Our children will not escape from under the umbrella of God. The eyes of God will continue to follow them, protect them and supervise them. Cultists will not win over them with their tricks and deceptive ways.
They will return to us with impressive reports from their teachers safe and sound and better prepared for a great future.
These we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
